Devialet Dione Review: The Premium Dolby Atmos Soundbar Tested

Premium soundbar in a modern living room

Les 3 points à retenir

  • 1The Central Sphere
  • 2Materials and Finish
  • 317 Drivers, Zero Compromise

The Soundbar That Thinks It's a Work of Art

The Devialet Dione is a soundbar that refuses to be just a soundbar. Designed by the French premium audio brand known for its egg-shaped Phantom speakers, the Dione packs 17 drivers, a rotating central sphere, and a price that leaves no doubt about its ambitions: $2,190.

After three months of daily use — movies, music, podcasts, gaming — does the Dione justify its price against the Sonos Arc, Samsung Q990D, and Sennheiser Ambeo? Here's our verdict.

Design: The Object That Turns Heads

The Central Sphere

The Dione's most distinctive element is its rotating 3-inch central sphere. It's not an aesthetic gimmick — it's the center channel speaker, and it automatically pivots 15 degrees to orient toward the listener whether the bar is on a stand or wall-mounted.

The center channel is crucial for home cinema: it reproduces dialogue, and poor positioning makes voices blurry or off-axis. The Dione's rotating system solves this with rare mechanical elegance. When wall-mounted, the sphere tilts down toward your listening position. When placed on furniture, it stays horizontal. The switch is automatic via an internal accelerometer.

Materials and Finish

Build quality is exceptional. The machined aluminum chassis is absolutely rigid — no parasitic vibrations, no unwanted resonances. The perforated metal front grille is perfectly stretched. The unit weighs 26.5 lbs, testament to the density of internal components.

Two finishes: matte black and light grey. Both are flawless and integrate elegantly into contemporary interiors.

Acoustic Architecture

17 Drivers, Zero Compromise

The Dione packs 17 drivers in a 5.1.2 configuration:

  • 9 full-range drivers across the front for left, right, and lateral effects
  • 1 central sphere dedicated to dialogue
  • 2 upfiring drivers for Dolby Atmos height effects
  • 4 woofers driven by SAM technology
  • 1 passive radiator for bass extension

SAM Technology (Speaker Active Matching)

SAM is Devialet's proprietary technology that mathematically models each driver's behavior in real-time and adjusts the input signal to compensate for inherent transducer non-linearities. The result: bass that defies expectations for this chassis size. The Dione reaches a convincing 30-35 Hz — sufficient for the vast majority of soundtracks without an additional subwoofer.

SPACE Technology

SPACE (Speaker Active Room Compensation) analyzes your room's acoustics via built-in microphones and adjusts the sound profile accordingly. Calibration takes about 30 seconds and makes an audible difference.

Sound Quality

Movies and Series

The Dione excels at cinematic reproduction. Dialogue is crystal clear — the central sphere is remarkably effective at projecting voices with clarity. Channel separation is clean, and effects move fluidly through the soundstage.

Dolby Atmos: height effects are present and convincing in suitable rooms (flat ceiling, 8-9 feet). That said, Atmos immersion trails a complete system with dedicated surrounds like the Samsung Q990D.

Reference tests:

  • Dune: Part Two — Sandstorm scenes exploit the soundstage width brilliantly. SAM bass delivers surprising physical impact. Chani's whispered dialogue remains perfectly audible.

  • Oppenheimer — The Trinity test sequence transitions from silence to explosion with impressive dynamics.

  • The Zone of Interest — The subtle, disturbing sound design is rendered with remarkable precision.

Music

This is where the Dione most clearly distinguishes itself from competitors. The Devialet sound signature — neutral, detailed, flat frequency response, minimal distortion — makes it an exceptional soundbar for music.

High-resolution streaming via AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, or UPnP is reproduced with surprising fidelity. The experience approaches a pair of hi-fi speakers more than a soundbar.

Sound Limitations

  • No surround extension: impossible to add rear speakers or an external subwoofer
  • Bass limited at high volume: push beyond 75-80% and bass runs out of headroom on the most demanding passages
  • Ceiling-dependent Atmos: like all soundbars, height effects depend on ceiling reflection

Connectivity

  • 1 HDMI eARC — main TV input
  • 1 HDMI input — for 4K player, console, etc.
  • 1 optical input
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0
  • AirPlay 2 and Spotify Connect
  • UPnP/DLNA

The dual HDMI is appreciated — many soundbars offer only eARC.

The Verdict

The Devialet Dione is the most refined soundbar on the market. It doesn't deliver the most convincing surround immersion — the Samsung Q990D and Sonos Arc with surrounds surpass it there. But it offers the purest sound quality, the most spectacular design, and the most satisfying music experience of any soundbar we've tested.

At $2,190, it's a luxury. But if your priority is exceptional sound in a beautiful object — and you can live without physical surrounds — the Dione is an investment you'll savor every day.

Final score: 8/10 — A sonic and visual gem, with honest limitations on surround immersion.
